ACNH Custom Design Codes: How to Use, Enter & Customize (2026)

To use custom design codes in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, visit the design kiosk inside the Able Sisters shop, select Search for designs, and enter a Design ID (MO-) or Creator ID (MA-) code. Download it to a free slot in your Custom Designs app. Nintendo Switch Online membership required.
Custom design codes are one of the most powerful creative tools in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. With a single code you can pull down a pattern made by any player in the world and apply it to clothing, paths, furniture, signs, and walls — turning your island into something completely your own. First, though, you need to understand how the system works.
This guide covers everything in order: what the codes are, how to unlock the kiosk, both ways to enter a code, how to apply designs to clothes, paths, and furniture, how to make your own, where to find the best codes, and how to manage your 50-slot inventory without losing any work.
What Are Custom Design Codes? (MO, MA & QR Explained)
Custom designs are 32×32 pixel patterns that apply to dozens of surfaces around your island. Every design shared online comes with at least one of three code types:
-
Design ID (MO- code) — a 17-character code for a single specific design. Format:
MO-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX. Enter it at the Able Sisters kiosk to download that design. -
Creator ID (MA- code) — a 14-character code tied to a creator's full published catalog. Format:
MA-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX. Enter it at the kiosk to browse every design that creator has shared. - QR Code — a scannable image that transfers the design data through the NookLink smartphone app without typing. Most legacy QR codes from Animal Crossing: New Leaf also still work.
| Code Type | Format | What You Get | How to Enter | NSO Required? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Design ID | MO-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX | One specific design | Able Sisters kiosk | Yes |
| Creator ID | MA-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX | All designs by a creator | Able Sisters kiosk | Yes |
| QR Code | Scannable image | One specific design | NookLink app | Yes |
If a site shows both a QR code and an MO- code for the same design, either one works — they produce identical results. The QR method is faster when you're already on your phone; the MO- method works when you only have the code written down.
How to Unlock Custom Designs First
The design kiosk inside Able Sisters — the piece you need to download other players' codes — is locked behind two progression milestones. You cannot use Design IDs or Creator IDs on day one of a new island.
On your first day, Tom Nook asks you to catch and donate fish or bugs to jumpstart the museum project. 15 donations unlocks Blathers and begins the island upgrade chain.
Mabel starts visiting your plaza 2+ days after Nook's Cranny opens. Once you've spent at least 5,000 Bells across her visits, she'll offer to build a permanent shop.
Construction takes one in-game day. When the shop is ready, walk inside — the design kiosk (the terminal on the right wall) is available immediately.
The Custom Designs app on your Nook Phone lets you create your own patterns from day one. The kiosk restriction only applies to downloading other players' designs. Creating your own costs nothing and has no unlock requirement.
How to Enter Custom Design Codes (Two Methods)
Once Able Sisters is open, you have two ways to add community designs. Use whichever fits your setup.
Method 1 — Using a Design ID or Creator ID (In-Game Kiosk)
The primary method, requiring only your Nintendo Switch.
The terminal is on the right wall. Select Search for designs.
Select Design ID for an MO- code (one design) or Creator ID for an MA- code (a full creator catalog).
One wrong character returns no results. Double-check before confirming.
The design appears on screen. Download it to an open slot in your Custom Designs app.
Method 2 — Scanning a QR Code (NookLink App)
When a site provides a QR code image, scan it with your phone and skip typing entirely.
The NSO app is free on iOS and Android. Sign in with the same Nintendo Account linked to your Switch.
Point your camera at the QR code image on your screen or printed out.
The design appears under Downloaded Designs — select it to save to a slot.
Check three things: (1) Is your Nintendo Switch Online membership active? (2) Do you have a free design slot in your Custom Designs app? (3) Did you include every dash in the MO- or MA- code? These three causes cover almost every failure.
How to Use & Apply Your Custom Designs
Once a design is saved, you can apply it to clothing, ground tiles, and furniture.
Clothing & Accessories
Open your Custom Designs app → select a design → Wear it to try it on instantly. By default the design appears as a simple canvas tee. For a proper clothing item with a cut and collar, take the design to the fitting room panels inside Able Sisters and purchase it as an actual wearable piece.
For full garment shapes — hoodies, dresses, long-sleeve shirts — unlock Pro Designs for 800 Nook Miles at the Nook Stop terminal. The Pro editor shows front, back, and sleeve panels separately so patterns wrap correctly around a 3D character. Community creators share thousands of clothing codes on Reddit r/ACQR and Nook's Island — search by style to find ready-to-wear designs.
Paths & Ground
Path codes replace the ground texture on outdoor tiles — the most popular use of custom designs. You can find curated stone, cobblestone, dirt, and brick sets with matching corner and edge tiles on Nook's Island (nooksisland.com) and Reddit r/ACQR.
Use either method above to get the code into your Custom Designs app.
Open Custom Designs → select the path → Place here.
Most path sets include corner, edge, and center tile variants. Place them in the right order so the path looks seamless.
Furniture, Signs & Walls
Simple Panels, Customizable Bulletin Boards, and many furniture items accept custom designs directly. Stand near the item → press A → Customize → Design Patterns → choose a design from your app.
For indoor walls, interact with the wall → Change Wallpaper → select a pattern from your Custom Designs app. This is the fastest way to display art or create themed room dividers without using a furniture slot.
How to Customize and Create Your Own Designs
The Custom Designs app includes a built-in 32×32 pixel editor with a 15-color palette — no third-party tools required.
- Open your Nook Phone → Custom Designs → tap an empty slot → Create a design.
- Use the brush, bucket fill, and eraser tools to paint your pattern on the grid.
- Select Share it when finished. The game generates your own MO- and MA- codes automatically.
Unlock the custom design pro editor for 800 Nook Miles to access full garment templates with front, back, and sleeve panels. Essential for clothing that wraps properly around a character rather than just tiling flat.
Keep path designs to 8–10 colors — too many create visual noise underfoot. Use the zoom tool constantly while editing: pixel art reads very differently at 1× vs. full-size on a character. Always test your design on furniture and clothing before publishing, since in-game lighting can shift perceived colors significantly from what you see in the editor.
Where to Find the Best Custom Design Codes
The best community sources for free custom design codes:
- Nook's Island (nooksisland.com) — large searchable database with pattern previews and MO- codes
- Reddit r/ACQR and r/AnimalCrossing — active creator communities posting original designs daily with codes in comments
- Pinterest and TikTok — great for visual discovery; creators usually include MO- codes in captions or video overlays
- Dream Islands — visit via a DA- dream code, spot designs you like, then note the creator's MA- code from the QR board in their home
Filter by category on Nook's Island to find exactly what you need — paths, clothing, flags, banners, and seasonal sets are all well represented with MO- codes ready to copy.
Managing Your Design Slots
Your Custom Designs app has exactly 50 slots shared between regular and Pro Designs. There is no way to increase this. Running out of slots is the most common reason new codes refuse to download.
- Remove designs from surfaces before deleting slots. Stand on a placed path tile and press Y to pick it up first. Deleting a slot while it's actively applied to your island leaves an unremovable pattern behind.
- Screenshot MO- codes before clearing slots. Open the design, capture the code on screen, and you can always re-download it later without any work lost.
- Group designs by use case. Keep all tiles from the same path set in consecutive slots so matching variants are easy to find while you're decorating.
