Villager Move Out Guide

Need to make space for your new villager? This guide walks you through moving out a current villager, knowing exactly when your plot is ready, and preparing for your ACNHMALL villager order.

Quick reminder: you're ready when your island has one open empty plot that does not say SOLD.

Before You Start

Some players call this "kicking out" a villager, but in Animal Crossing your villager has to ask to move out first — you can't force them to leave instantly through Isabelle.

Before you can invite a new villager, your island needs one open empty plot. An empty plot means the house space is open and hasn't already been sold to another villager. If the plot says SOLD, it's no longer available for your order.

Important: A villager in boxes is not an empty plot yet. Please wait until the next day, when the villager has moved out and the empty plot appears.

What to Expect

Quick Timeline

Once your villager agrees to move out, the process usually takes a few in-game days.

Day 1

Your villager asks to move out. If this is the villager you want to remove, choose the option that lets them leave.

Day 2

The villager is in boxes — they're packing. Your plot is not ready yet.

Day 3

The house is gone and the empty plot appears. Now you're ready to invite a new villager.

When a villager is ready to leave, you'll see a message like this — that's your cue to let them move out.
Don't wait too long: once your empty plot appears, invite your new villager as soon as you can. If the plot stays open, Tom Nook may sell it to a random villager.
Two Ways

How to Move Out a Villager

Method 1 — Normal Move Out

Best if you don't want to change your Nintendo Switch date.

  1. Play the game normally.
  2. Walk around your island and look for a villager with a thought bubble.
  3. Talk to the villager and check what they want.
  4. If they ask to move out and it's the villager you want to remove, let them leave.
  5. If it's not the villager you want to remove, ask them to stay.
  6. Keep checking on later days until the villager you want asks to move out.
Helpful note: a thought bubble doesn't always mean move out — a villager might want to give you a gift, ask for a nickname, visit your house, or just chat.

Method 2 — Faster Time Travel

Helpful if you want to find a move-out request faster. It takes a little patience and luck, since the move-out thought bubble is random. Only use this if you're comfortable changing your Switch date.

  1. Save your game and fully close Animal Crossing.
  2. Move your Nintendo Switch date forward about 15 days.
  3. Open the game and check your villagers outside — around 1 PM is good, since villagers are usually walking around during the day.
  4. Look for a thought bubble above a villager.
  5. Talk to the villager and check what they want.
  6. If the correct villager asks to move out, let them leave.
  7. If the wrong villager has the bubble, don't continue if you're not ready.
  8. Close the game before saving, move to another day, and check again.
  9. Repeat until the villager you want asks to move out.
Tip: move-out bubbles are harder to find on event days — holidays, Bug-Offs, Fishing Tourneys, or when K.K. Slider is visiting. If you don't see one, try another day.
Good to Know

Why the Villager You Want May Not Ask

Sometimes the villager you'd like to remove doesn't get the move-out bubble right away — this is normal. A villager usually won't ask to move out if they are:

  • The newest villager who recently moved to your island.
  • A villager you recently told to stay.
  • A villager with a birthday coming soon.
  • A villager whose house is currently being moved.

If the villager you want doesn't ask, keep checking on another day. The move-out bubble is random and can take time.

FAQ

Common Questions

Can Isabelle remove a villager? +

No. Talking to Isabelle about a resident doesn't force them to leave — it mainly helps reset things like their clothing or catchphrase.

Can hitting or ignoring villagers make them leave? +

No. Hitting, pushing, or ignoring a villager doesn't directly force them to move out. The move-out request still depends on the game choosing a villager to ask.

Why won't the villager I want ask to move out? +

The request is random, and some villagers won't ask — the newest arrival, one you recently asked to stay, one with a birthday soon, or one whose house is being moved. Keep checking on another day.

Is a villager in boxes ready for my order? +

No. A villager in boxes is not an empty plot yet. Please wait until the next day, when the empty plot appears.

What if my plot says SOLD? +

If your plot says SOLD, that spot has already been taken by another villager. You'll need a new empty plot before inviting your ACNHMALL villager.
